As a mental health counselor, part of what I do is teach people different skills to help reduce their stress and anxiety.
When we are stressed our nervous systems are activated and our minds are reacting based on emotion, instead of focusing on logic, reason and rational problem solving.
I created a problem solving model that I teach people in my stress management workshop. This can be a helpful tool to pull out when you’re stressed and trying to solve a problem.
Problem Solving Model
1) What is the problem.
2) Who or What is effected by this problem.
How am I effected by this problem?
Who else is effected? How are they effected?
3) What is the desired outcome?
What do I want to have happen to be okay?
What might another person want to have happen to be okay?
What are my responsibilities as I work towards a desirable outcome?
4) What can you do to meet these needs and solve the problem?
What has work in the past?
What has worked for others?
Am I respecting myself and the other people involved?
What guidelines/policies/laws do I have to follow?
5) Select a possible solution and try it out!
Which of the solutions seems to fit best for me and the people involved?
Do I have what I need for this solution?
Try that solution out.
6) Check in and see if it’s working
Did the solution resolve the problem?
If the solution did not resolve the problem, go back to the possible solutions and see if another one will work.
Hope this helps reduce your stress!
Share with others if you think it may be helpful.
Cheers,
Charlene
